Wilfrid Laurier Season Preview

A new coaching team takes over this season at Wilfrid Laurier University. Long time coach, and previous league president Matt Allen resigned at the end of the 2022 season. Tom Cox, is the new man at the helm, bringing in recognizable names in JT Tomlinson, and D’Arcy Smith to assist. The Golden Hawks have already started their tryout/training camp process, and are continuing between now and Labour Day weekend, with Sunday and Tuesday gatherings in Paris, ON. Laurier has one-preseason tune-up scheduled on August 31st when they will play the University of Waterloo in Paris, ON.

This season’s squad will be a nice mix of returning players, transfers in, and first year students. There are eight returning players, and alongside them three transfer athletes (Amy Hughes (Simon Fraser), Avery Hilpert (UBC), and Maddy Halstead (Ottawa)).

Incoming first year players include:

  • Sarah Hunter (OBJ) from Vaughn ON. Coming for Economics
  • Olivia Salese ( Tigers’05) from Bayden ON. Coming for Psychology
  • Mikayla Melehes (Oakville) from Guelph ON. Coming for Health Science

The Golden Hawks will be playing home dates this season in Kitchener, at Budd Park, due to some field renovations in Waterloo making diamond time hard to come by. The Hawks start the season on the road with an Ottawa/Carleton road weekend, before coming home in week 2 for six home games.
