What a great first full day Saturday, with some really good matches across the league. We had two extra inning games between Ottawa and Waterloo, some high scoring games (TMU/Toronto, Queen’s/York), wonderful pitching performance lines, and many more exciting things!
Here are the Sunday matches:
Ottawa (1-1) vs Toronto (2-0)
Ottawa wraps up their opening weekend road swing, with two games against the Varsity Blues. Ottawa played to a split Saturday vs Waterloo, while the Blues took care of the Bold on back to back occasions. Ottawa showed they’re solid in all game aspects in their season opening series, and they will prove to be a good test today in Toronto. The Blues hit the ball well Saturday, and used the offense to win two games. They will look to continue their fast start today at Herdon Park.
York (0-2) vs Waterloo (1-1)
York played a tight opening game in Brampton Saturday afternoon, falling to Queen’s. A good showing for the Lions in that opener against one of the expected top pitchers in the league from the Gaels. The second game was full of runs, and the Lions came up short again. Today York plays their first road series in St Agatha as they are the opponent for the host Warriors. Waterloo earned a split vs the Gee-Gees on Saturday, with a 10-5 win in 9 innings in game 2. The first game Saturday was also an extra inning affair, won by Ottawa. Waterloo showed the new talent has beefed up the competition level in Warrior land.
Queen’s (2-0) vs TMU (0-2)
The Bold host Queen’s Sunday, looking for their first win of 2025. Queen’s completes their opening weekend road trip with two wins in hand from their sweep of York. The Gaels offense kicked into high gear in the second game on Saturday, and they will look to keep that going against the Bold, who gave up a large amount of runs in their opening series. Meanwhile TMU showed on offense they can put up numbers as well, and will likely need to do so Sunday to keep pace.
Laurier (0-2) vs McMaster (1-1)
McMaster split their opening series on campus Saturday vs Windsor. A great pitching performance, and solid defense shut down the Lancers. Laurier struggled to plate runs Saturday falling at home twice to the visiting Mustangs from Western. Laurier will need to use their bats Sunday to try and salvage the weekend. McMaster seeks good things Sunday as well to be in a solid position in the standings after week 1 in the West.
Windsor (1-3) vs Guelph (2-0)
The Gryphons swept two games at home Sunday by identical 8-1 wins. A strong statement series to commence the fall season. They can now confirm they will be a force this fall in this series against Windsor. The Lancers did get their first win Saturday in Hamilton, and they will be hungry for more Sunday as they don’t want to risk possibly exiting week 1 with 4 or more losses. The expectation is two close games this afternoon in Guelph.
Western (2-0) vs Brock (2-2)
Brock completes a busy weekend with two games this afternoon against Western. Brock and Western actually meet each other today and again next weekend in a scheduling quirk, so the Badgers will want to get one or more wins in the next four vs Western to avoid a steep hill to climb after these games are done. Western looked strong on the mound shutting down what is expected to be a good offensive team in the Golden Hawks Saturday. New coach Becky Goudy and her team earned their first wins in the OUS.
